Camelback Mountain sits in the middle of everything here, with the resort estates of the corridor at its feet. The low houses of Paradise Valley lie on its north flank and, half an hour up the road, the saguaro foothills of Pinnacle Peak begin, where the desert takes over. We looked at every serious address from Arcadia to Troon North and kept only the ones whose service holds up to the mountain. One holds five-star standing – the Canyon Suites enclave inside the Phoenician estate – and the other three are four-star hotels whose grounds and kitchens earn them the company, listed at exactly the tier they hold. Four made the cut.

The desert proper – Pinnacle Peak's boulders and golf laid through the saguaros. It lies half an hour north of Old Town, with trails into the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and the darkest skies in the valley.

When is the best season for Scottsdale?
October through April – dry, clear days in the seventies for most of it, cool nights, and the mountain trails at their best. February and March are the peak, with spring-training baseball across the valley and the golf tournament week at TPC Scottsdale, so book early. Summer is the other Scottsdale: afternoons well above a hundred degrees, the resorts at their quietest, the pools the whole point, and monsoon storms rolling over Camelback from July into September.
Which of these hotels has golf?
Three of the four. The Phoenician and its Canyon Suites share the 18-hole Phoenician Golf Club, reconfigured by Phil Smith and reopened in 2018, at the foot of Camelback Mountain. Four Seasons guests get priority tee times on Troon North's two Tom Weiskopf courses, Monument and Pinnacle, next door in the Pinnacle Peak foothills. The Global Ambassador has no course of its own – its rooftop and its five kitchens are the draw – and the concierge can hold a tee time nearby.
