Five-star Los Angeles, behind the hedges

Los Angeles keeps its best hotels out of sight – behind hedges on Sunset Boulevard, up a canyon road in Bel-Air, on a piazza off Canon Drive. The oldest opened in 1912, the newest in 2017, and both learned the same trade: looking after people who came here to be left alone. Between Beverly Hills and Bel-Air we kept only the addresses where the service is as discreet as the gardens. Five made the cut.

Beverly Hills

Hedges, gardens and the Golden Triangle – bungalows on Sunset at the top, newer addresses down on Wilshire, Rodeo Drive a walk from any of them.

Beverly Hills

Bel-Air

A canyon of gated estates above Sunset – one hotel on twelve acres of garden, a lake with swans, and the Getty a short drive west.

Good to know

Which neighborhood should I stay in?

Beverly Hills puts Rodeo Drive, the Golden Triangle and most of the collection within a few blocks – Sunset Boulevard for the gardens and bungalows, Wilshire and Canon Drive for the newer addresses and the piazza. Bel-Air is the canyon choice: one estate on Stone Canyon Road, twelve acres of garden and no street life at all, a short drive from the rest.

When is the best season for Los Angeles?

The climate is mild all year, so the calendar matters more than the weather. September through November is the clearest stretch – warm days, cool evenings, the marine layer gone. Winter brings what little rain the city gets and the awards season with it, when Beverly Hills fills; late spring can open gray and burn off by lunch.

Do I need a car?

Less than you would think, if you stay in Beverly Hills. The Golden Triangle is walkable and the hotels run house cars within a few miles – a Mercedes at The Beverly Hills Hotel, a Rolls-Royce at the Waldorf Astoria, a BMW i7 at The Maybourne. For Bel-Air, the Getty, the beach or anything further, ask the concierge for a driver.

How do I reserve a stay?

Search your dates on any hotel's page to see current rates and what is available, then book the room or villa you want. A concierge stays with the reservation from there – for the villa with its own entrance, a table at the Polo Lounge, or a driver up to Bel-Air.
