Castles of Salzburg and the Salzkammergut
Salzburg is a baroque city of domes and spires pressed between two hills and a river, with Mozart's name on every corner.
Salzburg is a baroque city of domes and spires pressed between two hills and a river, with Mozart's name on every corner. The luxury is the castle hotel — a fifteenth-century schloss on the shore of Lake Fuschl, a medieval castle on the Mönchsberg above the old town — and, in the Grossarl valley, the alpine resort that keeps the whole family. The Festival fills July and August; the Salzkammergut begins half an hour east, a country of lakes — Fuschl, Wolfgang, Mondsee — under limestone peaks that the emperors kept as their summer ground; and an hour south, past the Pass Lueg, the Grossarl valley climbs into the Pongau, where family houses have run ski slopes and alpine pastures for three generations. Rosewood Schloss Fuschl holds the region's strict five-star standing; the castle above the city and the two Grossarl houses are listed at four. Summer on the lakes from June to September, winter in the valley from December to March, and the castles all year.

Good to know
Which are the five-star hotels in Salzburg & the Salzkammergut?
One, on the lake. The five-star house we list in Salzburg & the Salzkammergut is Rosewood Schloss Fuschl, the fifteenth-century castle on the shore of Lake Fuschl less than half an hour from the city, with a modern spa and freestanding chalets beside its rooms and suites. Beside it we keep three four-star addresses, each listed exactly at the standing it holds: Hotel Schloss Mönchstein, the castle on the Mönchsberg above Salzburg's old town with its starred restaurant, the Glass Garden; DAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort, the Hetteger family's ski-in, ski-out house at Grossarl; and Moar Gut, the family resort of the same valley with its baby spa and Icelandic horses.
Where should I stay in Salzburg & the Salzkammergut: the lakes, the city or the Grossarl valley?
Fuschl and the Salzkammergut for the lake castle and the summer water, half an hour east of the city and about half an hour from Salzburg airport; the city itself for the Festival, the old town and the castle on the Mönchsberg, ten minutes from the airport; and the Grossarl valley, an hour south in the Pongau, for skiing from December to March and the alpine pastures in summer, with the two family houses that keep children and grown-ups equally busy.
When is the best time for Salzburg & the Salzkammergut?
Two seasons. On the lakes and in the city, June to September, with the Salzburg Festival filling July and August and booking the castles months ahead; September is the softest month on the water. In the Grossarl valley, December to March for the slopes and the après, and June to September for the pastures and the treks. Spring and November are quiet everywhere, and the castle hotels run all year; each house keeps its own calendar on its page.
How do I get around Salzburg & the Salzkammergut?
Salzburg airport is the door to all three zones: the city in ten minutes, Lake Fuschl in about half an hour, the Grossarl valley in about an hour by the Tauern highway and the Pass Lueg. Munich airport is about two hours from the city and serves the region when Salzburg's schedules are thin. A car makes the lakes and the valley easy; the city itself is walked. The houses arrange airport transfers on request.
How do I reserve a stay?
