The city's great hotels are quiet machines. Among them are a 1904 landmark on Fifth Avenue, a house cut from crystal across from MoMA, a Four Seasons on Barclay Street below Canal Street — and, at the tip of the island, a 1906 ferry terminal with the harbor in its windows. We looked from Central Park South to the Battery and kept only the addresses where the service holds up to the city. All ten hold five-star standing. Ten made the collection.

When is the best season for New York?
Late April through June and September through early December are the city at its best — park in bloom or in color, theaters full, terraces open. Winter has its own reward: the park under snow and the hotels at their calmest.
