The Amalfi Coast keeps its great houses on the cliff and Capri keeps its own across the bay. On the coast they stand stacked above the beach at Positano and Praiano, on the ridge at Ravello high over the water, and on the rock either side of Amalfi toward Conca dei Marini; on the island, above the harbor at Marina Grande and elsewhere on Capri. We looked at every serious address on the coast and on the island and kept only those whose service holds up to the view from the terrace. Five hold five-star standing; the four beside them are four-star addresses, listed at exactly the tier they hold. Nine made the cut.

Golden hour over Amalfi Coast & Capri

The neighborhoods

Golden hour over Positano & Praiano

Positano & Praiano

The western end of the coast, where Positano and Praiano hold three of the nine hotels. Positano's houses are stacked down the hillside to the Spiaggia Grande and its pier, where the boats to Capri leave. Praiano lies a few minutes east along the coast road, quieter and facing the sunset.

First light over Ravello, Amalfi & Conca dei Marini

Ravello, Amalfi & Conca dei Marini

The center of the coast, where Amalfi, Ravello and Conca dei Marini hold four of the nine hotels. Amalfi and its cathedral sit at sea level, with the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone on the ridge at Ravello high above it. The cliff road runs west past Conca dei Marini and the Fiordo di Furore.

Golden hour over Capri & Anacapri

Capri & Anacapri

The island across the bay, with the other two hotels, one of them above Marina Grande. From the harbor at Marina Grande the funicular climbs to the Piazzetta and the town of Capri; Anacapri sits higher up on the western side, above the Blue Grotto, with the chairlift to Monte Solaro.

Good to know

Which are the five-star hotels on the Amalfi Coast & Capri?

Five. The five-star hotels we list on the Amalfi Coast & Capri are Le Sirenuse and Il San Pietro di Positano, at Positano; Casa Angelina, at Praiano; Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, Amalfi Coast, at Ravello; and J.K. Place Capri, above Marina Grande on Capri. Alongside them we keep four four-star addresses, each listed at exactly the tier it holds: Hotel Santa Caterina; Borgo Santandrea; Jumeirah Capri Palace; and Palazzo Avino. Each has its own page, reached from the list above, with a concierge behind every stay.

Which part of the coast should I stay on, and is Capri different?

Positano and Praiano are the western end of the coast – Positano's houses stacked down to the beach, with Le Sirenuse in the middle of them and Il San Pietro di Positano on its own headland a few minutes east; Praiano quieter, with Casa Angelina on the cliff. Ravello sits on the ridge high above Amalfi, with Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, Amalfi Coast at the top of the town and Palazzo Avino in it; Hotel Santa Caterina is on the cliff just outside Amalfi and Borgo Santandrea on the cliff between Amalfi and Conca dei Marini. Capri is an island across the bay, reached by boat from Positano, Amalfi or Sorrento, with its own rhythm – J.K. Place Capri above the harbor at Marina Grande and Jumeirah Capri Palace. Choose Positano for the coast at its most photographed and the boats to Capri at your feet; Ravello for the gardens, the summer concerts and the cool of the height; Capri for the island once the day boats have left.

When is the season on the Amalfi Coast and Capri?

The coast runs on a season. Most houses open around Easter and close in late autumn, and the whole coast and Capri go quiet from roughly November to March – the concierge confirms each hotel's opening dates for your stay. May, June and September are the weeks to aim for: warm enough to swim, the paths and the boats not yet full, the evenings long. July and August are hot and crowded, on the coast road above all, with the sea at its warmest. Early April and October are cooler and calmer, with the gardens of Ravello and the cliff walks at their best.

How do I get to the Amalfi Coast and Capri, and do I need a car?

Naples is the gateway – its airport and its high-speed rail station – and from there Positano or Ravello is about an hour and a half by car, longer in summer. A car is more hindrance than help once you arrive: the coast road is narrow and slow, parking is scarce, and Capri keeps visitors' cars off the island in season. Arrive with a driver or by boat, and move between the towns by boat or with the concierge's driver. Capri is reached by ferry or hydrofoil from Naples, Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi, and the hotels arrange the transfer up from Marina Grande.

How do I reserve a stay?

Search your dates on the hotel's page to see reference rates, then send the concierge a request. The concierge confirms exact rates and availability with you before anything is booked, and any payment and its timing are set out before you confirm.
