San Miguel de Allende and its three houses

San Miguel de Allende is a colonial town of pink stone and cobbled lanes in the state of Guanajuato. On a hillside of the Bajío, the neo-Gothic spires of the Parroquia rise over the Jardín, the mansions of the historic center stand behind their courtyard doors and the high desert light has drawn painters here since the 1930s. Its best hotels are houses of the old town: a colonial-style estate beside Parque Juárez with a rooftop facing the Parroquia, a collection of sixteenth- to eighteenth-century mansions a few streets from the Jardín, and a contemporary resort on the edge of the center with the domes below its pool. We looked at every serious address inside and around the historic center and kept only those whose service holds up to the house. Three made the cut – one holds five-star standing and two hold four-star standing, and the copy says which is which.

Good to know

Which are the five-star hotels in San Miguel de Allende?

One. The five-star hotel we list in San Miguel de Allende is Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, the colonial-style estate beside Parque Juárez with its rooftop facing the Parroquia. Alongside it we keep two four-star addresses that hold four-star standing and are never called five-star: Casa de Sierra Nevada, A Belmond Hotel, in its mansions of the historic center; and Live Aqua Urban Resort San Miguel de Allende, on the edge of the center. Each has its own page, reached from the list above, with a concierge behind every stay.

Which part of San Miguel de Allende should I stay in?

All three hotels sit in or beside the historic center, and the choice is between the quiet of the park and the streets of the old town. Rosewood stands beside Parque Juárez, the shaded park below the center, ten minutes on foot from the Jardín and the Parroquia. Casa de Sierra Nevada is the old town itself – its mansions are scattered along the cobbled streets a few minutes from the Jardín, with the churches, the market and the galleries at the door. Live Aqua is on the edge of the center, a short walk or a taxi from the Jardín, with the town's domes laid out below its rooftop pool. Choose the park for calm and gardens; the center for the town at the door; the edge for the views and the pool.

When is the best season for San Miguel de Allende?

November to April is the dry season – warm days, cool nights and the clearest light, with the town at its liveliest around Christmas, Semana Santa and the Day of the Dead at the start of November, when rooms go first. May and June are hot and bright before the rains; July to September bring afternoon storms that clear by evening and leave the hills green. The town sits at about 1,900 meters, so evenings are cool in every month and a jacket is worth packing. The concierge confirms the festival dates that fall on your stay before you book.

How do you get to San Miguel de Allende – and do I need a car?

There is no airport in town. León–Guanajuato (Del Bajío) is about an hour and a half by road and Querétaro about an hour and a quarter; Mexico City's airport is three and a half to four hours by road. Once you are there you will not want a car: the historic center is a place for walking, the lanes are steep and cobbled, and everything from the Jardín to Fábrica La Aurora is on foot or a short taxi ride. The hotel arranges a car from the airport with your booking, and for the day trips – the sanctuary at Atotonilco, the vineyards and hot springs outside town, Guanajuato city – the hotel arranges a driver.

How do I reserve a stay?

Search your dates on the hotel's page to see reference rates, then send the concierge a request. The concierge confirms exact rates and availability with you before anything is booked, and any payment and its timing are set out before you confirm.
