Aspen

A sense of the place

Why it's in the collection

Because it survived the silver crash and the Depression when no other hotel in town did, and still pours at the same 1889 bar.

  • Built in 1889 by Jerome B. Wheeler at the height of the silver boom, with Aspen's only elevator and some of the first full electric lighting west of the Mississippi.
  • Restored by Auberge in 2012 with interiors by Todd-Avery Lenahan and Aspen architects Rowland + Broughton, keeping the encaustic tile floors, the balustrades and the original Chippendale chinoiserie bar.
  • J-Bar, the 1889 saloon, still pours at its original bar — Gary Cooper, Lana Turner and John Wayne drank here in the 1950s.
  • Prospect, the restaurant, is hung with commissioned David Yarrow photographs; Bad Harriet, the cocktail lounge below stairs, takes its name from Wheeler's society wife.
