Why it's in the collection
Because it is Aspen's only five-star hotel where you ski to the door, and the cellar underneath has held the Wine Spectator Grand Award since 1997.
- Opened in 1989 by Aspen Skiing Company at the foot of the Silver Queen Gondola, and named for a mining claim staked uphill in 1879.
- Element 47 — silver's atomic number — keeps a cellar of roughly 20,000 bottles and has held the Wine Spectator Grand Award every year since 1997.
- Ajax Tavern on the slope is the town's après-ski institution, with The Wine Bar and The Spa at The Little Nell inside.
- Six suites are named for Aspen's founders; the 2,500-square-foot Walter Paepcke Suite, redone by Champalimaud in 2017, is the town's largest, and the guest rooms are by Holly Hunt.
