A sense of the place

Why it's in the collection

Because six canal palaces of the 17th and 18th centuries on the Herengracht were joined around a private garden – and Waldorf Astoria holds the house to five-star standing.

  • Six canal palaces of the 17th and 18th centuries on the Herengracht, the innermost of the three great canals of the ring; a Waldorf Astoria hotel of Hilton.
  • The houses are joined around a private garden behind them, away from the canal; the Keizersgracht and the Prinsengracht run parallel a street apart.
  • Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star 2026 for the hotel – the only one in Amsterdam; holds five-star standing.

The neighborhood

Canal Ring & Centrum

The three great canals and the old center at their core – home to five of the six hotels. The Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht were dug in the 17th century around the Singel and have been a World Heritage site since 2010. At the core stand Dam Square and the Royal Palace, with the Flower Market on the Singel; the Nine Streets and the Jordaan lie to the west, Rembrandtplein and the Amstel to the south-east.

  • The Herengracht and the canal ring, at the door.
  • Rembrandtplein, the Amstel and the Flower Market, a few minutes' walk.
  • Museumplein and the Rijksmuseum, a short walk south across the Singelgracht.
