• Opened in 2001 beside the Water Tower, where Superior Street meets Michigan Avenue: a 20-story building by Elkus Manfredi Architects whose winged plan echoes The Peninsula Hong Kong, with 339 rooms and suites from 531 square feet – among the largest in the city.
• Shanghai Terrace serves Shanghainese and Cantonese cooking with a seasonal outdoor terrace; afternoon tea is poured in The Lobby, Z Bar is the rooftop cocktail bar, and Pierrot Gourmet is the café.
• The Peninsula Spa takes the 19th and 20th floors, with a half-Olympic indoor pool and a sun terrace over the skyline; each winter the terrace becomes the 2,100-square-foot Peninsula Sky Rink, the only hotel ice rink in Chicago.
• The Peninsula Suite spreads over about 3,500 square feet with its own outdoor terrace, above a ladder of Grand and Executive suites; downstairs, the white-uniformed pages, a Krigler fragrance boutique in the lobby and the weekly Chocolate Bar are the house signatures.
