They reach from the Beaux-Arts landmark John Jacob Astor IV built in New York in 1904 and the Carlton Hotel of 1926 in Washington, opened by President Coolidge, to five palazzi joined along the Grand Canal in Venice, the Palm Tower at the trunk of Palm Jumeirah, the protected turtle beach of Saadiyat and islands reached by seaplane or launch in the Maldives and Bora Bora. Nine hold five-star standing; eleven are four-star addresses, labeled as such. From New York: John Jacob Astor IV opened the Beaux-Arts St. Regis in 1904, and butler service for every guest, at any hour, has been the house's tradition since — the King Cole Bar, under Maxfield Parrish's mural, is the other. Aspen's ski season runs from late November into April, and summer is the other Aspen, with the Music Festival and the Maroon Bells. The island houses have their dry seasons: November to April in the Maldives, April to October in Bali, May to October in Bora Bora. The Gulf houses of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Riyadh live by their winter, roughly October to April, and Bal Harbour's season runs from December through April.
