El Silencio Lodge & Spa
Environmentalism gone high-end, deep in the cloud forest of Bajos del Toro: the forest first, the luxury a close second.
Bajos del Toro · Costa Rica
A sense of the place
Why it's in the collection
Because Costa Rica was doing ecotourism before anyone else and this most socially minded of tropical paradises was among the first to fuse green with luxury the right way round — environmentalism first, high-end second: the guest is expected to appreciate the natural cleaning products and the low-consumption bulbs along with the thread count, and the cloud forest is best met outside the room, which the lodge makes easy.
- In the cloud forest of Bajos del Toro, in the highlands north-west of San José; independent house.
- Suites with fine linens and private hot tubs; a guide desk that lines up the forest on foot, horseback, raft, bike and zip-line; the spa with treatments drawn from the jungle; the option of offsetting the flight by funding the lodge's forest conservation.
- Two MICHELIN Keys in the 2025 selection; holds four-star standing.
