A sense of the place

First light over Baa, Raa, Noonu & Lhaviyani Atolls

Why it's in the collection

Because Soneva opened it in 2016 on a 5.6-kilometer lagoon in Noonu Atoll with roofs that retract over the bed for the stars, slides from the deck into the sea and an observatory over the water – and it holds five-star standing.

  • Opened in 2016 on a 5.6-kilometer lagoon in Noonu Atoll; a Soneva resort, reached by seaplane.
  • Overwater villas with retractable roofs above the bed and slides into the lagoon; the Chapter Two villas on the island; an observatory over the water.
  • Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star 2026 for the hotel; holds five-star standing.

Baa, Raa, Noonu & Lhaviyani Atolls

The atolls to the north of Malé, reached by seaplane or domestic flight, with twelve of the twenty-four hotels. They lie an atoll or two apart from one another. Baa, a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2011, has Hanifaru Bay and its mantas; Raa and Noonu lie beyond it, where the private islands are; Lhaviyani, to the east, has its channels and dive sites.

  • The lagoon, all 5.6 kilometers of it, at the door.
  • Cheval Blanc Randheli and Velaa Private Island, its neighbors in the collection in the same atoll.
  • Soneva Fushi, the sister island in Baa Atoll, an atoll to the south.
“Soneva's island of 2016 on a 5.6-kilometer lagoon in Noonu Atoll, where the villa roofs slide back for the stars.”
