STANZA is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or a partner of Red Carnation.

Five Red Carnation hotels are in the Stanza collection; two hold five-star standing. They span three destinations: three in London, one in Edinburgh & Scotland and one in Geneva. Red Carnation is the family-owned collection of the Tollmans — founded by Bea Tollman and named for the red carnation Stanley Tollman wore in his buttonhole — with houses in Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Botswana and Switzerland. In London it holds The Egerton House Hotel, a 28-room townhouse in Knightsbridge steps from the V&A and Harrods; Hotel 41, 30 rooms opposite the Royal Mews with its black-and-white Executive Lounge and the late-night 'plunder the pantry'; and The Milestone Hotel & Residences, a Victorian mansion of 62 rooms, suites and apartments opposite Kensington Palace. In Edinburgh it opened 100 Princes Street in 2024 — 29 rooms in the former Royal Over-Seas League headquarters, with the Castle in most of the windows. In Geneva it keeps Hotel d'Angleterre, its Swiss house, a small hotel on the Quai du Mont-Blanc facing the Jet d'Eau, with the Leopard Bar and the Windows restaurant over the lake. The Egerton House Hotel and Hotel 41 hold five-star standing; The Milestone Hotel & Residences, 100 Princes Street and Hotel d'Angleterre are four-star addresses, listed as such. Each page shows a reference rate per night, and the concierge confirms exact rates and availability before anything is booked.

Where does Stanza list Red Carnation hotels?

In three destinations. In London, three houses: The Egerton House Hotel on Egerton Terrace in Knightsbridge, steps from the V&A and from Harrods; Hotel 41 on Buckingham Palace Road, opposite the Royal Mews and across the road from Buckingham Palace, a few minutes from Victoria station; and The Milestone Hotel & Residences on Kensington Court, opposite Kensington Palace and its gardens, with Kensington High Street at the door. In Edinburgh & Scotland, one: 100 Princes Street, on Princes Street in the New Town, facing the Castle across Princes Street Gardens, a street from George Street and a few minutes from the Scottish National Gallery. In Geneva, one: Hotel d'Angleterre, on the Quai du Mont-Blanc facing the harbor and the Jet d'Eau, with the Brunswick Monument at the door, the Bains des Pâquis a few minutes north along the shore and the Jardin Anglais and the Old Town across the Pont du Mont-Blanc.

What distinguishes the Red Carnation hotels in the collection?

Each was admitted on its own merits, one hotel at a time, never by brand. What the five share is the scale the family keeps: 28 rooms at The Egerton House Hotel, 30 at Hotel 41, 62 rooms, suites and apartments at The Milestone Hotel & Residences, 29 at 100 Princes Street and a small house on the Quai du Mont-Blanc in Geneva — townhouses and a mansion rather than grand hotels, with the touches the houses are known for: the black-and-white Executive Lounge and the late-night larder at Hotel 41, the Castle in most of the windows and The Wallace at table on Princes Street, the Leopard Bar and the Windows restaurant over the lake at Hotel d'Angleterre. The Egerton House Hotel and Hotel 41 hold five-star standing; The Milestone Hotel & Residences, 100 Princes Street and Hotel d'Angleterre hold four-star standing, and we list them at exactly that tier.

When is the best time to stay at a Red Carnation hotel?

It depends on the destination. London belongs to late spring and early autumn — May, June and September — with the Chelsea Flower Show in late May, Trooping the Colour in June and Wimbledon at the turn of July taking the rooms of Knightsbridge and Kensington months ahead; July and August are the warmest and busiest months, the weeks before Christmas the fullest for the grand houses, and January and February the quietest. Edinburgh runs on its long days from May to September: in August the International Festival, the Fringe and the Tattoo take the whole city and rooms go months ahead, Hogmanay does the same at New Year, and May, June and September are the mild weeks without the crowds. Geneva comes into its own from May to September, when the Jet d'Eau runs late into the evening, the Bains des Pâquis fill with swimmers and the steamers leave the quays, with the watch fair in spring and the larger conferences taking the rooms of the quays months ahead, and the hotels at their quietest between conferences in winter. Each destination page carries its note on the months, and the concierge advises on dates for a specific hotel.

How do I reserve a Red Carnation hotel through Stanza?

Search your dates on the hotel's page to see reference rates, then send the concierge a request. The concierge confirms exact rates and availability with you before anything is booked, and any payment and its timing are set out before you confirm.
